  • The artwork size is the size of your image, not necessarily the paper on which the artwork is printed. So, artwork size is excluding borders and empty space of paper surrounding the art.
  • Will any part of my art be covered by the frame? What if my art has a border?
  • All picture frames generally require some sort of slight overlap (1/4") to keep your art held in place.
  • If your art has a border surrounding it that you do not want shown in your final frame, you have some options to cover it by not including in height & width measurements or ignoring border in measurements.

The inner dimensions or window of the mat board should be 1/2 inch less than the dimensions of your piece of art. This provides a surface to which the work can be taped or glued. For instance, an 11 x 14 photo will have a mat board opening that measures 10-1/2 x 13-1/2 inches as in this example.

When choosing a mat for your artwork, the basic principle is that the mat should be lighter than the artwork or picture but darker than the wall. The mat is there to provide visual space between your picture, the frame and the wall. Do not make the mistake of getting too fancy when choosing a mat which in turn takes away from the artwork.
