Measuring Mat Opening Size: A How-To Guide

Here is an example of a picture. This can be any print, photo or certificate you may have.

When determining the opening size for your mat there are a couple things to consider:

  1. How big is my frame?
  2. How much of the print do I want to cover?

You can cover as much of the print you like by the mat! Some may do this to cover any damages or holes on a print. You can cover a MINIMUM of ⅛ - ¼ inches around the perimeter of the print.

Why do I need to cover at least ⅛ - ¼ inches?

Covering less than ⅛ - ¼ inches of the print by the mat runs a risk of the print falling out. You will need to cover a little to ensure the print stays in place.

Here is an example: Let's say the OUTER print height and width (see reference below) is 10 x 14 inches

By subtracting how much you cover on each side, you will come to a final opening mat size of 9.5 x 13.5 inches

Want to cover more? Just substitute how much you would like to cover in the equation.

If the OUTER height and width of your print is 10 x 14 and you want to cover 1 inch all around:

  • Mat opening height = 10" - 1" - 1" = 8 inches
  • Mat opening width = 14" - 1" - 1" = 12 inches
  • The final opening mat size will be 8 x 12 inches
